Posted April 3, 2008 – A 12-year-old boy stabbed and killed a man he saw choking his mother in their Maryland home Monday night.

It all started when the boy heard his mother scream while he was playing a video game in another room. When he rushed into the kitchen, he saw her lying on the floor while 64-year-old Salomon Noubissie, who shared their boarding house, was on top of her choking her.

The boy, who is 5- feet 6-inches tall and 175 pounds, says he yelled at Noubissie to stop, but to no avail. “He just ignored me. He didn't stop. He just kept hurting her," he said in an interview with The Washington Post (who chose not to reveal his name since he is a minor). "I knew I had to kill him so he would stop hurting my mother," he told the paper.

So, using the same knife he says the family used to cut turkey during Thanksgiving, the boy swung at him with it, slitting him across the neck. Noubissie released his grasp.

At first, the boy’s mother, Cheryl Stamp, was confused about what had happened. She asked her son, “What did you do?” She says he was silent, “But I knew when I looked in his eyes. I said, 'Oh, Lord.'”

Amid Noubissie’s screams, mother and son left the kitchen and Stamp yelled upstairs for someone to call the police. As they waited in the bedroom, she says her son stayed silent. When police arrived Noubissie was bleeding profusely from his neck and was, according to Stamp, argumentative. Noubissie later died at the hospital after suffering a neck wound that cut open an artery.

The attack was surprising to Stamp because, she says, her and Noubissie (a Cameroonian immigrant) became friends shortly after moving into the house about three months ago. But that night, she says, he was acting crazy and speaking his native French in a “devilish” voice while hollering and grabbing her. Stamp’s attempt to calm him down didn’t help and he became more and more physical.

“He threw me into the door so hard it hit my back, and it made my chest start hurting," she told the newspaper. "He threw me down and started choking me. I think that's when my son came in. . . . He protected me."

This incident doesn’t serve as the family’s first round of tragedy. Stamp’s husband committed suicide more than 20 years ago, which her now 27-year-old son witnessed as a young child.

Officials don’t know whether they are going to file charges against the boy or not. But state’s attorney Glenn Ivey says that the boy’s reason for killing Noubissie, protecting his mother, might be a legit defense.

“In Maryland there can be a legitimate defense of third parties in the event of a violent attack,” he told the paper. “That is a possibility in this case.”

Neighbors in the Landover, Md., community support the youngster.

"His reaction was to help his mother," one said. "This was a 12-year-old defending his mother." And the boy, while he isn’t glad it came to murder, saw no other option. "I just asked God again to protect me and my mother," he told the Post. "I told God that I had stabbed him because he was killing my mother. I know he understands, and I think he will keep us safe now."
