Mar 9-Deputies shoot gunman at Orange County mall

MISSION VIEJO, Calif.—Authorities say a gunman opened fire at an Orange County mall and was shot by sheriff's deputies. Lt. Dan Dwyer of the Sheriff's Department says deputies responded to a possible robbery in progress at a jewelry store inside The Shops at Mission Viejo just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
The suspect shot at deputies when they confronted him outside the mall near a parking structure. Deputies returned fire and struck the man. He was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound but his condition is unknown.
Dwyer says it's possible the suspect fired shots inside the mall, but there were no reports of injuries.
The mall has been shut down.
